CHENNAI: GUDUVANCHERRY TO AVADI RAIL LINE PROJECT BACK ON TRACK

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has started to speed up the groundwork to build a new line from Avadi to via Sriperumbudur as part of the efforts to revive the project which was mooted almost nine years ago.

A final location survey for the 60 km line, which will also have a branch line from Sriperumbudur to Irungattukottai, will be carried out soon. The new line will link the western line and southern line from the city via the industrial hub of Sriperumbudur.

A tender has been floated for the purpose and the work, once awarded, will be completed in six months. The survey will chart the terrain, alignment of the tracks, the space for stations, the cost of the work, and a project report. This will be done in the areas assessed during the preliminary survey which has already been done.

Sources said that the line is being revived for construction as there is a renewed thrust on cargo handling and is likely to help attract freight from industrial areas in Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, Irungattukottai, and other nearby areas.

The new Avadi-Sriperumbudur-Guduvancheri railway line with the scope to connect the northwestern suburbs with the southern suburbs will also be beneficial for passenger and cargo movement because the state government will be selecting one of the two sites - Parandur and Pannur - for second airport for Chennai. The two sites identified for the new airport are less than 45minutes away by road from Sriperumbudur.

Sources said that the railway and airport projects are likely to take close to 10 years, the plan to revive the railway line project is timely.

The Avadi-Sriperumbudur-Guduvancheri with a spur from Sriperumbudur to Irungattukottai costing Rs 839crore was first included in the railway budget in 2013-14. Railways has spent Rs 48crore for surveys and preliminary work and the project received Rs 1 crore in 2020-21.

T Sadagopan, a consumer activist and a frequent commuter, said that the proposal is beneficial as it would make access to the industrial corridor easy and Avadi can be developed into a terminal like
