Land Registration Begins for Parandur Airport Despite Ongoing Protests

Chennai Update:

Despite ongoing protests from local residents, the land registration process for the proposed airport project in Parandur officially began on Wednesday.

As reported by Thanthi TV, 19 landowners from five villages have agreed to sell their land for the project. The registration took place at the Kancheepuram Joint Sub-Registrar Office, with land worth Rs 9.22 crore already registered. The land is being acquired through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC), which is handling the process.

The project has faced resistance from villagers who are concerned about displacement and environmental issues. However, the Tamil Nadu government is offering attractive compensation to encourage participation.

According to a government order issued by V Arun Roy, Secretary of the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, landowners will receive between Rs 35 lakh and Rs 60 lakh per acre. This includes 275% of the guideline value and a 25% incentive.

For areas with higher land values, compensation could go up to Rs 2.57 crore per acre. This generous compensation is aimed at ensuring smooth land acquisition in Kancheepuram and Sriperumbudur taluks, covering a total of 1,960.63 acres for the airport.

While land acquisition has started, protests are likely to continue as the local community seeks clarity and reassurances on resettlement and environmental concerns.
