Parandur Airport: TN Government Offers Compensation of Up to ₹2.57 Crore Per Acre to Landowners

Parandur Airport: TN Government Offers Compensation of Up to ₹2.57 Crore Per Acre to Landowners

CHENNAI: To speed up the work on the new Parandur airport, planned as Chennai’s second international airport, the Tamil Nadu government has announced higher compensation for people giving up their land in Kancheepuram and Sriperumbudur.

As per the latest Government Order issued by V Arun Roy, Secretary of Industries Department, landowners will get between ₹35 lakh and ₹60 lakh per acre. This amount includes 275% of the guideline value and an extra 25% incentive.

This rate is fixed for lands where the government guideline value (GLV) is between ₹5 lakh and ₹17 lakh per acre. In areas where the land value is higher, the compensation may go up to ₹2.57 crore per acre.

The government hopes this will help speed up land buying and avoid delays. The Kancheepuram District Collector has been allowed to hold private talks in two cases:

  1. For 374.53 acres where the GLV is ₹5–₹17 lakh, but landowners ask for more than the fixed rate.

  2. For 996.09 acres where the GLV is more than ₹17 lakh per acre.

If landowners don’t accept the fixed rate, officials will follow the rules under the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, 1997. In such cases, the amount will be calculated based on the land value, any buildings or trees on it, and will also include 100% solatium and a 25% incentive.

The state plans to buy 3,331.25 acres for the Parandur airport project. The final amount paid will depend on the location and type of land.

This move is seen as a step to give new energy to the ₹20,000 crore airport project, which is expected to boost air travel and development in the region.

However, many villagers are still unhappy. Members of the Parandur Airport Protest Committee said they will not accept the offer. G Subramanian, who leads the group, said, “Land prices in our villages have gone up to ₹2 crore–₹3 crore per acre since the project was announced. The government’s offer is too low. We are not ready to agree.”
