CHENNAI:
The land acquisition for Chennai’s second airport at Parandur is moving quickly. Officials said that nearly 1,000 acres have already been acquired for the greenfield project.
According to a Daily Thanthi report, the government has paid around Rs 400 crore in compensation to landowners, and efforts are ongoing to acquire the remaining land soon.
The new airport in Kancheepuram district will need a total of 5,183 acres from 13 villages, including Parandur, Ekanapuram, Nelvoy, Podavur, Akkamapuram, and Valathoor. While some residents are opposing the project due to concerns about losing their homes and jobs, others have voluntarily handed over their land.
By September, about 441 landowners from 12 villages had given up 566 acres. The process picked up speed after the first group of 19 landowners transferred their land in July. Officials say the acquisition work is now progressing faster to move the project to the next phase.
The Parandur airport is planned as a major new facility to reduce traffic at Chennai’s existing airport. Despite protests and political opposition, authorities have confirmed that the project will continue as planned.
